Mahale Mountains National Park

Mahale Mountains National Park (1,613 km²) is located along the Albertine Rift on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, central western Tanzania. Gazetted in 1985, this park represents the western limit of the ‘Greater Mahale Ecosystem/Landscape’ (ca. 18,200 km²). Mahale Mountains are part of the Albertine Rift Biodiversity Hotspot and of particular importance for the conservation of primates. Mahale NP is an ‘Important Bird Area’. At least 70 species in 11 orders of mammals are listed for the park, a few of which are endemic species. Mahale Mountains National Park has eleven species of primate, including one unidentified dwarf galago Paragalago.  Since 2009, Tom Butynski and Yvonne de Jong have visited Mahale National Park three times.
